The biggest and most important part of the photographic oeuvre of Luxemburgian photographer Romain Urhausen (*1930) was created between 1950 and circa 1970. In this period he conceived an exciting, multifaceted and high-quality photographic work which results in a highly fascinating cultural heritage, a testimony to the cultural, urban, social and natural environments of many places and various eras. These photographs are little known to this day and are now for the first time on show in this constellation. On the one hand, the CNA would like in this way to provide an insight into the diversity of Urhausen’s photographic works, created more than sixty years ago. On the other hand, it is the intention to make the stylistic features of these works, which are important for Luxemburgian photography and culture history, visible as well.
The publication Romain Urhausen Photographer, edited on the occasion of the exhibition, is an exploratory expedition through Urhausen’s photographic art forms and styles. Furthermore it scrutinizes his photography in the light of photography history; the contributions by Dr Roland Augustin, Marguy Conzémius (CNA) and Dr Paul di Felice examine and work out the particular characteristics and influences of this extraordinary photographer and his body of work.
